KARACHI:The government’s decision to close the super market throughout the day was challenged by the administration of a local superstore at the Sindh High Court on Friday.
Sources said that the superstore, which is located at the city’s Gulshan-e-Iqbal area, challenged the government’s closure decision today. The petition filed by the superstore authorities stated that the order by the provincial government to close the supermarket throughout the day was illegal. It also said that the responsibility to control traffic lay with the traffic police and local administration and the closure of the supermarket was resulting in losses by the millions.
The opening of the supermarket which also has branches in other areas of Karachi had caused massive traffic jams, illegal parking and blocked roads when hundreds of people flocked to the superstore. Residents of Gulshan-e-Iqbal had also complained of pollution and traffic jams.
Keeping the public interest in view, Gulzar-e-Hijri Assistant Commissioner Ishaq Dad issued the orders for the supermarket to remain closed partially for six hours throughout the day. The supermarket was accused of not containing enough car-parking space for its customers as it was required to do so.
